Manali Travel Guide: Mountains, Adventure and Nature

By Kabir Singh8 min read

Sitting in the Kullu Valley beside the Beas river, Manali is one of India's most loved mountain towns. It works as a base for snow adventures, high-altitude road trips and gentle forest walks. Whether you have a long weekend or two weeks, here is how to make the most of it.

Best time to visit

March to June brings pleasant weather and clear views, making it the busiest period. December to February offers snow and a winter wonderland, though some roads may close. The monsoon months can bring landslides, so check conditions before travelling.

Solang Valley

About 14 km from town, Solang is the centre of adventure activities: paragliding and zorbing in summer, skiing and snowboarding in winter. A ropeway offers views of surrounding peaks.

Old Manali

Across the Manalsu stream, Old Manali has traditional wooden houses, guesthouses and laid-back cafés. Nearby, the Hadimba Devi Temple sits in a cedar forest and is one of the region's most atmospheric sites.

Rohtang region

Rohtang Pass offers snow views for much of the year, but access requires a permit and the number of vehicles is regulated. The Atal Tunnel now provides year-round access to Sissu and the Lahaul valley, which makes a stunning day trip.

Adventure activities

Manali is a hub for outdoor experiences. Always choose registered operators and check safety equipment.

  • River rafting on the Beas near Kullu (seasonal).
  • Paragliding at Solang or Dobhi.
  • Short treks to Jogini Falls and Lamadugh.
  • Multi-day treks such as Hampta Pass and Beas Kund.

Local food

Try siddu (a steamed bread with stuffing), trout from local streams, thukpa, momos and Himachali dham, a festive meal. Fresh apples and apple products are excellent in late summer.

Accommodation considerations

Mall Road is convenient but busy; Old Manali and Vashisht are quieter with more character. In winter, confirm that your stay has proper heating and hot water. Homestays in nearby villages offer a more local experience.

Travel tips

Allow time to acclimatise if you are heading higher. Layered clothing works best because temperatures change quickly between sun and shade.

Conclusion

Manali offers both thrills and calm. Mix one or two adventure days with slow mornings in Old Manali's cafés and walks through cedar forests, and you will see the valley at its best.
